Connecting with our community to spread awareness and hope.
We had the amazing opportunity to present to ~15,000 people at the extremely popular Leander Diwali Festival. By presenting on stage, we were able to educate thousands of children, teens and other peers on risk & protective factors as well as general information surrounding substance use disorder.
This festival had many businesses and leaders that sponsored or backed it, which allowed our promotion to network with certain connections and build up our support. We also handed out personalized fliers and took pictures with many people at the festival, including regular people as well as the Leander Police Sheriffs, First Aid Teams, and the founder of STARRY - a mental health organization that has a similar motive to our campaign.
Along with the help of our school psychologist, Ms. Jennifer Townsend, we presented to multiple classes at Leander High school in which we were able to highlight the significant issue of substance use disorder, especially at our own school district. Townsend, our mental health consultant, has a specialist degree in school psychology and utilized this in order to serve in Leander & Victoria ISD.
Her primary role encompasses conducting psychoeducational evaluations to determine support needs for students with disabilities, providing direct counseling services to those students, intervening in mental health crises, and developing behavior support plans for students who struggle with their mental health.
With permission from our school officials, we were able to install an informational Addiction Uncovered display in the Leander High School library, which is still up to this day. The display is complete with complimentary business cards and stickers.
Students regularly come to visit this display, and are able to learn more about risk & protective factors as well as our campaign's main initiative of informing the public.
By partnering with Great American Slab Bakery, a local business, we were able to sell a large customized cookie cake - branded with our logo - along with our own cookies in order to raise funds for mental health awareness at our bake sale at Veterans Memorial Park in Cedar Park, TX.
Thanks to all of the community support, we as a collective were able to raise over 140 dollars. This money was donated to the JED foundation once we kickstarted our own Official JED Foundation Fundraiser.
Our campaign was extremely privileged to host Mr. Angelo Malfatti, a former case manager for non violent, first time offenders, some of which participated in the Drug Court program at a mental health agency in Utah.
Malfatti effectively supplemented our seminar by providing crucial information for the 30+ students that had attended, allowing us to vividly explore the mindset behind people that are addicted to substances and how they can work on prevention/rehabilitation.
We had the wonderful idea to organize a sports related “Hoops For Health” community event at Veterans Memorial Park in Cedar Park, TX. Many kids showed up to this event to hang out, blow off some stress and hang out with friends.
This community event was a great reminder of how exploring healthy or interesting hobbies can immensely reduce the risk of using substances. The children that had participated reported feeling relieved and fulfilled after a long week of exams and academic stress.
We debuted our “Affirmation Board” at the Leander High School club fair, in which many middle school children and high school teens were able to use the provided sticky notes and pens to write uplifting messages for each other, or even other people that needed those words of kindness.
Neurologist Elizabeth Peckham of Central Texas Neurology Consultants graciously accepted our invitation for our campaign to gain an interview from her. With her expertise and intellect, we were able to dissect the various facets of addiction and explore risk/protective factors from an experts point of view.
We organized a “spirit week” in which many students were invited to explore many aspects of addiction through a series of activities or themed days. These days included wearing our custom purple glasses, wearing bracelets after winning addiction trivia, wearing purple clothing, or even taking a photo with the Addiction Uncovered photo frame. The manner in which the community and school came together to support our campaign was truly inspiring.
